Versmold / Gütersloh (dpa / lnw) - After an avian influenza outbreak has been confirmed in a duck fattening farm in Versmold (Gütersloh district), the animals are examined at around 60 poultry farmers in the area.

As the district of Gütersloh announced on Thursday, the nationwide responsible Friedrich Loeffler Institute examined the samples from the stable and found that, as feared, it was a highly contagious form of the bird flu virus (H5N8).

The 20,000 ducks had already been killed on suspicion and symptoms.

From Friday, the district will set up a restricted area in the vicinity of the company.

Particularly strict requirements for poultry farmers apply here.

For example, the animals and their products are not allowed to be transported and the stables must be secured against unauthorized entry.

Veterinarians are to clinically examine all stocks of the 60 poultry farms in the area.

A little further into the surrounding communities, an established observation area with stricter hygiene requirements and a transport ban extends, the district announced.

These measures affect around 500 owners.

On Wednesday, the Paderborn district tightened the measures around the farm after a confirmed case of avian influenza in a hobby poultry farm.

According to the state environment ministry, a suspected case in the Minden-Lübbecke district is being checked.

In order to contain the animal disease, chickens, turkeys and the like must remain in the barn throughout the Detmold administrative district.

The infectious disease, also known as avian flu, occurs mainly in waterfowl and other birds.

With intensive contact, people can also become infected.

However, transmission via infected food is considered unlikely.

Avian influenza is a notifiable animal disease and is therefore controlled by the state.
