The announcement from the Swedish Public Health Agency means that the previous recommendation from 2 February to limit the use of Astra Zeneca's vaccine to persons under 65 years of age ceases.
Previously, the vaccine from Astra was only given to adults under the age of 65 because there were not enough data to prove the protective effect for the elderly.
But now the Public Health Agency has enough information to make a new assessment.
Three studies have been done
There are three major studies from the UK that have shown that Astra's vaccine has a good protective effect even for people over 80 years of age.
According to the Swedish Public Health Agency, the studies show that the protective effect is on a par with other approved vaccines.
- All vaccines offered are very effective and according to the studies have a good protective effect for everyone over 18 years.
AstraZeneca's vaccine against covid-19 can therefore also be recommended for people over the age of 65, says state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell in a statement.
