  • For an attack on authority The Supreme Court asks the Congress to proceed criminally against the deputy of Podemos Alberto Rodríguez

The deputy and secretary of the Podemos Organization, Alberto Rodríguez, has denied in his statement this Thursday as investigated before the Supreme Court (TS) that he attacked a policeman during a demonstration that took place on January 25, 2014 in La Laguna ( Santa Cruz de Tenerife), framing the investigations against him in "the criminalization of social protest."

"I denied those facts because they never happened," Rodríguez told the press after declaring for half an hour before investigating judge Antonio del Moral, who is investigating him for alleged crimes of an attack on authority and a minor offense or offense of injuries due to allegedly having kicked a policeman during a protest against the so-called 'Wert law'.

The 'purple' leader has argued that he limited himself to participating "along with thousands of canaries in a demonstration for public education and against cuts," asserting that "he was not even at that moment" in which the attacks on the agents.

Rodríguez has denounced that the fact that this case arises now "is part of a generalized strategy (...) to criminalize social protest."

"Also maybe it has something to do with him being a deputy of United We Can", he has slipped.

In any case, it has advanced that it will continue to manifest itself.

"I have nothing to regret or anything to be ashamed of, and I will continue to participate in mobilizations all my life, and I will continue to do so with pride, due to a lot of persecution, a lot of police assembly, and many attempts to criminalize the protest. ", has settled.

The case was opened in the Supreme Court at the request of the Court of Instruction Number 4 of La Laguna, which in its day came to issue an order to open an oral trial against Rodríguez, but was without effect after his election as a deputy, with which it happened to be graded before the Supreme Court.

Del Moral offered Rodríguez the possibility to testify voluntarily, but he declined the appearance, set for October 19, referring to the statement he had made before the judge in La Laguna, for which the instructor had to request a plea to Congress to take a statement.

Rodríguez was summoned for January 28, although Del Moral postponed the statement at the request of the defense after it informed him that the Canarian deputy suffered from COVID-19.

The appearance was set for this Thursday once his attorney informed the judge of his client's medical discharge.

The Prosecutor's Office asks for a year in jail

The Public Prosecutor's Office had presented an accusation document qualifying Rodríguez's conduct as the crime of attack against a law enforcement officer and lack of injuries, for which he requested the imposition of a sentence of one year in prison for the crime and one month of fine for the offense.

The matter to be investigated, according to the Prosecutor's Office, dates back to 2014, when Rodríguez participated in a protest against the LOMCE organized coinciding with the visit to La Laguna of the then Minister of Education of the PP Government, José Ignacio Wert, who was going to participate in the inauguration of the cathedral.

According to the reports, the demonstration resulted in insults to the agents deployed to protect the authorities and in the launching of fences and all kinds of objects, for which some police officers were attacked.

Rodríguez would be in a group of people who have participated in attacks, such as 'banners' and punches.

His exact participation in these crimes must now be clarified by the Supreme Court.

Regarding this same deputy, the Supreme Court opened a case in 2017 for a crime of public disorder in relation to some events that occurred in La Laguna on December 25, 2006 and, later, declared his criminal responsibility extinguished, considering that the crime had prescribed. for which he had been investigated.
