Oberstdorf (dpa) - “Private project” instead of the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing: Andreas Bauer will stop as the national ski jumping coach for women at the end of the season.

The 57-year-old announced this in a media round on Thursday morning.

«For a long time I have come to the decision that the home World Cup in Oberstdorf would be the highlight for me again.

That I am happy to continue until then.

At the end of the season I will resign, »said Bauer one day after the end of the women's World Cup in Oberstdorf.

Bauer has accompanied the jumpers since the first World Cup hour in 2011/2012 and has been responsible for many victories, world championship titles and two Olympic medals in recent years (gold from Carina Vogt in 2014, silver from Katharina Althaus in 2018).

The decision was difficult for him, reported Bauer, for whom the time-consuming trainer job would no longer be compatible with the private project, which was not explained in more detail.

At the announcement of the farewell in the circle of the jumping team around top athlete Althaus, "tears also flowed" on Wednesday evening, said the coach.

Team manager Horst Hüttel left the switch open for those who follow Bauer for the upcoming Olympic season.

«It will be a difficult task for me and Karin Orgeldinger to place someone here.

We have the Olympics in front of our chests for the coming year, ”said Hüttel.

Bauer not only shaped the association, but also the athletes.

"It definitely leaves a gap," emphasized Hüttel.

Bauer himself comes from the World Championships in Oberstdorf, was an active jumper, and then also worked as a trainer for the men's teams of ski jumpers and Nordic combined athletes.

After a decade with women, "he has come full circle," said the long-time head coach.

Bauer told how he stood at the ski jump on Schattenberg when he was six and dreamed of jumping down there.

"The end here with the gold medal in mixed was wonderful," said Bauer about the surprising title of Althaus, Anna Rupprecht, Karl Geiger and Markus Eisenbichler.

The national coach had already made his decision to draw a line for a long time, but so far only communicated in the narrowest circle.
