Wismar (dpa) - The Russian laying ship "Akademik Tscherski", which left Wismar on Thursday, is to lay 2 pipes for the Nord Stream gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea.

The project company announced on Thursday that it was driving towards Kaliningrad to carry out tests.

Thereafter, it is planned that the ship will begin laying the pipeline in Danish waters.

"Nord Stream 2 AG has sent the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) the relevant report," it said.

The "Akademik Tscherski" was relocated to the Baltic Sea after special ships from a Swiss company were withdrawn from the construction of the pipeline at the end of 2019.

The reason for the withdrawal were sanctions threats from the USA.

The “Akademik Tscherski” was most recently in Wismar, where it was rebuilt.

The «Fortuna», which is currently laying pipes for the pipeline in Danish waters, had already been located here.

According to the project company, the double line is still missing around 110 kilometers of pipeline in Danish and around 30 in German waters.

The double line is supposed to transport 55 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually from Russia to Germany.

The project had recently come under increasing pressure.

The US first imposed sanctions on a company involved in the construction in January.

The Russian company KVT-RUS, which operates the laying ship "Fortuna", is affected.
