Eight people were injured this Wednesday in an attack with an unspecified weapon carried out by an individual, wounded and later arrested, in Vetlanda (southern Sweden) that the police are investigating as a possible terrorist attack.

"

We have opened a preliminary investigation for attempted homicide

, that is the definition of the crime we handle. But there are details in the investigation that make us inquire about possible terrorist motives," Melana Grann, chief of police at the Jönköping province.

Neither Grann nor Jonas Lindell, the local police chief, clarified what kind of details were involved, although they reported that the intelligence services (Säpo) were involved in the investigation.

The police received around 3:00 p.m. local time a notice of an event in the center of Vetlanda, with just over 13,000 inhabitants, involving a man who attacked eight people in five different areas of that small town.

The event was initially classified as a possible homicide

, but shortly before 7:00 p.m. local time, it was changed to the category of an alleged terrorist attack.

The individual was reduced and wounded by a shot by an agent, which caused his transfer to a hospital: his condition is uncertain, but the police indicated that he does not have injuries that cause fear for his life and hope to be able to question him soon.

The police authorities

refused to give specific information about the individual

, except that he lived in a nearby town, that he had a history of minor crimes and that it is ruled out for the moment that he had the collaboration of other people.

The weapon used was also not reported, although Swedish media suggest that the man, in his 20s, used a knife.

"The situation is variable, but we do not have concrete details

," Grann said of the condition of the injured.

Security forces cordoned off various areas of the city center - including the central station - and rail traffic through Vetlanda was temporarily suspended.

The Swedish Prime Minister, Stefan Löfven, in a statement condemned the "appalling crime"

and assured that Swedish society faces together such "despicable" acts.

"They remind us of how fragile our safe existence is. I invite everyone to send a thought to those affected by violence and to the men and women in health, the police and the municipality who work caring for the injured and restoring security", Löfven pointed out.
