Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Despite the classification of the entire AfD as a suspected right-wing extremist case by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution will continue not to wiretap or spy on the Southwest AfD.

The state association of the AfD is currently not an object of observation in the country, the German press agency learned on Wednesday from the Ministry of the Interior.

The State Office for the Protection of the Constitution continues to monitor the extremist AfD sub-structures “Young Alternative Baden-Württemberg” and the formally dissolved “wing” in the state.

The Ministry of the Interior did not want to comment on the specific classification of the AfD as a suspected case by the Federal Office.

Quite apart from this question, a classification basically has an impact on the work of the state office, said Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) of the dpa.

"Due to the statutory obligation of the federal and state governments to cooperate in matters relating to the protection of the constitution, findings that arise in connection with this endeavor are passed on to the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution."

However, it does not necessarily follow from the federal decision that the State Office must also classify the corresponding effort as an object of observation.

According to the ministry, classification as a suspected case by the Federal Office is equivalent to treatment as a so-called observation object at the state level - and means the use of intelligence means such as the use of informants.

At the moment, however, the protection of the constitution in the southwest is only evaluating publicly available sources such as newspaper articles on the AfD or obtaining information from demonstrations.
