Cologne (dpa / lno) - National player Hendrik Pekeler cannot do anything with the offensive Olympic goals of representatives of the German Handball Federation (DHB).

"You can talk about goals if you have qualified," said the THW Kiel cyclist in an interview with "Mannheimer Morgen" on Wednesday.

DHB Vice President Bob Hanning had named winning the gold medal at the Tokyo Games in the summer.

DHB President Andreas Michelmann also considered Olympic gold to be a realistic goal, despite the worst World Cup placement in the history of the association.

At the qualifying tournament on the weekend after next in Berlin, the German team must first secure a ticket for the Olympics.

"And even if that should succeed, we still have to be honest and say, with a view to the personal possibilities of other teams: Other nations are more likely than us to win Olympic gold," said Pekeler.

Teams like world champions Denmark, Spain, Norway or France are better staffed than Germany.

«I see us behind this, which is not to say that we cannot win a medal too.

But as of now one cannot expect this.

That would be unrealistic, "said the 29-year-old.
