Ischgl (dpa / lby) - The Austrian winter sports resort Ischgl will no longer operate its lifts this winter season.

"This winter we tick off," said tourism director Andreas Steibl on Wednesday.

In view of the still worrying occurrence of infections, the tightened travel restrictions and the still lacking prospects for opening steps in the catering and hotel industry, starting skiing is less justifiable than ever, announced the Silvrettaseilbahn AG.

In spring 2020, Ischgl was in the international headlines as a hotspot for the spread of the coronavirus.

In the winter season, the Tyrolean town normally has a turnover of 300 million euros.

In contrast to many other winter sports areas in Austria, Ischgl had renounced the ski operation that was permitted again since the end of December 2020.

The place with its 45 lifts and 239 kilometers of slopes lives from many foreign guests.

The most important group are German vacationers.

Due to the quarantine obligations in Germany and Austria, tourist travel has practically come to a standstill.

The extensive safety concept that had been prepared for a possible start in winter should now be implemented in the summer season starting on June 25, it said.

This includes, among other things, its own test station with medical staff.
