Gütersloh / Paderborn (dpa / lnw) - Due to several suspected cases of avian influenza, chickens and other farmed poultry in the entire Detmold administrative district are no longer allowed to leave the stable for the time being.

A spokesman for the State Office for the Environment, Nature and Consumer Protection (Lanuv) said a decree for the so-called stabling obligation went to the districts in the region.

After suspected cases in a fattening duck farm in the Gütersloh district and a hobby owner in the Paderborn district, another suspicion of the virus is currently being examined in a turkey farm with 7,000 animals in the Minden-Lübbecke district, the spokesman said.

If an infection with avian influenza is likely, the livestock is also killed here.

In Gütersloh, many of the 20,000 ducks had already shown massive symptoms and, like the 50 animals in the neighboring Paderborn district, had been killed.

The Lanuv spokesman said that compulsory stalls are an effective way of preventing the disease from spreading further.

In addition, farmers are called upon to check the effectiveness of their hygiene measures in order to prevent virus entry into the barn.

Samples from the affected farms were examined on Wednesday morning by the responsible Federal Research Institute for Animal Health, the Friedrich Loeffler Institute.

It is responsible for confirming suspected cases and also determines the type of virus.

Depending on how contagious the variant is, further measures are imposed in the circles concerned.

According to a district spokesman from Gütersloh, a zone with special protective measures has been set up around the duck farm in Versmold.

Poultry and poultry products may not be transported in the area, special documentation requirements apply for animal owners.

However, details on possible restricted areas depend on the investigations by the federal institute.

The infectious disease, also known as avian flu, occurs primarily in waterfowl and other birds.

With intensive contact, people can also become infected.

However, transmission via infected food is considered unlikely.

Avian influenza is a notifiable animal disease and is therefore controlled by the state.
