Berlin (dpa / bb) - The budget committee of the Bundestag has approved more than 4.4 million euros for renovation projects in the old Spreepark in Berlin-Treptow.

With 1.44 million euros of this, the ferris wheel is to be restored, as several members of the Bundestag announced on Wednesday.

Another 3 million euros are earmarked for the renovation of the workshop and for the conversion into a cultural center.

The funds come from the federal program “Renovation of Municipal Facilities”.

A total of around 7.5 million euros will flow into four Berlin projects.

"Despite this success for the four projects and for Berlin, I am looking at the fact that, due to formal errors in the applications of the Senate Department for the Interior and Sport, 11 projects did not make it to the final selection," said the CDU Member of the Bundestag, Klaus-Dieter Gröhler, on Tuesday.

SPD state chief Franziska Giffey welcomed the funding: "The Spreepark will finally be awakened from its slumber and it is good that federal funds will also flow for it," she said.

The «Plänterwald Culture Park» was once the only large amusement park in the east.

It was opened in 1969 on the GDR's 20th birthday.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the restart of a fairground operator with millions in investments ended in chaos.

In 2001 the park was closed and the area fell into disrepair.

In 2014 the Berlin Liegenschaftsfonds bought back the Spreepark.

Since then, the new start has been tinkered with.

The red Ferris wheel can be seen from the Spree and, according to Grün Berlin GmbH, was built as the successor to a smaller construction in 1989 shortly before the end of the GDR.

The dismantling of the bike began at the beginning of January this year.

The parts are then to be examined and refurbished from 2023.

Larger parts should be x-rayed.

The estimated cost of the renovation: four million euros.
