Neuzelle (dpa / bb) - In the fight against the spread of African swine fever, reed areas were burned down on Wednesday in the Neuzeller lowlands on the Polish border.

The Oder-Spree district announced that the wild boars should be deprived of their retreat between two parallel protective fences on the Oder dike and along federal highway 112.

Wild boars are to be hunted intensively in this zone in order to prevent further introduction of the animal disease from western Poland.

At the same time, the birds that breed on the ground in the lowlands would be protected from the wild boars, according to the district.

The burning of the reeds leads to a rejuvenation of the plants, which would presumably grow back up more densely.
