Kiel (dpa / lno) - The district courts in Schleswig-Holstein decided last year on a total of 1,859 applications for consumer insolvency.

That was 40 percent less than the year before, as the North Statistics Office reported on Tuesday.

The authority pointed out that many private individuals had postponed the application because of the announced shortening of the so-called residual debt discharge procedure.

The duration of the procedure will be shortened from six to three years, explained a spokeswoman.

With this change in the law, consumers can become debt free faster.

Insolvency proceedings were opened in 1819 cases, and once the application was rejected due to lack of assets.

39 applications resulted in a debt settlement plan through which a debtor makes an offer of payment to his creditor.

The insolvent consumers owed their creditors almost 75 million euros - a decrease of 35 percent.

The claims of the creditors per insolvent person rose by almost eight percent to a good 40,000 euros.

The statistical office was unable to give reasons for the sharp increase.

Most frequently consumer insolvencies were reported in the Pinneberg district with 285 proceedings.

In the Stormarn district and the independent city of Flensburg, however, insolvency applications were only decided for 65 and 67 consumers respectively.

In the Stormarn district, consumers were also the least likely to be affected by bankruptcy, with 27 bankruptcies per 100,000 inhabitants.

The highest insolvency rate was in the independent city of Neumünster with 117 and in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg with 114 insolvencies per 100,000 inhabitants.

The quota for the whole country was 64.
