Erfurt (dpa / th) - The trend towards shopping on the Internet in Thuringia resulted in a real increase in sales of 3.2 percent in retail last year.

While the corona pandemic had a negative effect on traditional retail in inner cities with a lockdown lasting for weeks, sales in internet and fuel trading jumped 19.0 percent in real terms compared to the previous year, according to figures from the State Statistical Office on Tuesday.

Overall, however, this area only accounts for just under five percent of total sales in Thuringian retail.

Nationwide, retail sales rose by 3.9 percent.

Supermarkets and self-service department stores, which were always open, also benefited in Thuringia with a sales increase of 4.1 percent.

The large retail sector with clothing, shoes, leather goods, jewelry, but also opticians and pharmacies recorded a decline of 1.8 percent, which was weakened mainly by the positive development at pharmacies.

According to the figures from the State Office, the trend towards part-time jobs in retail increased last year.

The number of employees with full-time positions decreased by 3.2 percent.

In return, the number of part-time employees rose by 1.9 percent.

Almost two thirds of all employees in the Thuringian retail sector worked part-time in 2020.
