Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - Saxony-Anhalt wants to increase the pace of vaccinations against the corona virus.

First of all, all municipalities are now allowed to care for people who are in the second-highest priority in the vaccination sequence, as Health Minister Petra Grimm-Benne (SPD) announced on Tuesday after a meeting of the black-red-green cabinet.

This includes people over the age of 70, people with disabilities, organ transplants and the seriously ill, but also staff at daycare centers, elementary and special schools and certain police forces.

In addition, Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU) announced that he would introduce a so-called circulation period.

Accordingly, municipalities should be obliged to use the vaccine in full a few days after delivery.

Haseloff criticized that if appointments were currently being made until April with increasing delivery quantities, it would take too long.

The municipalities would have to ramp up operations and, if in doubt, also offer appointments after 4 p.m. and on Saturdays.

"Every day that is won here is one day less in which there is a risk of being infected, seriously ill or dying."

No reserves are built up with the Astrazeneca active ingredient, as a second vaccination is only necessary after three months for full protection.

With the vaccine from Biontech / Pfizer, the second dose must be administered after three weeks, but the country no longer wants to withhold the full ration for the second vaccination.

Rather, the reserve should be reduced to 20 percent, according to Grimm-Benne.

Saxony-Anhalt has fallen behind in vaccination speed compared to the other countries.

While it was still in second place at the turn of the year, it has now slipped to penultimate place.

Accordingly, a good 101,000 people in Saxony-Anhalt have been vaccinated at least once, as the RKI announced on Tuesday.

That corresponds to 4.6 percent of the population.

The national average is 5.1 percent.
