A departure 'in the dark'.
The 71st edition of the Italian Song Festival begins with a gag between Amadeus and Fiorello.
On the stage-spaceship of the Ariston, Sanremo in the covid era: without an audience, the start marked by the applause of the orchestra musicians.
The evening begins with the reading of a letter.
Amadeus explains why he wanted this festival to exist despite the difficulties.
"Normality is an extraordinary thing, and to have a bit of normality we worked a lot. One question above all: why the 80 elements of the orchestra.
First, Fiorello's homage to Vincenzo Mollica.
Connection for Tg1 from the Ariston balcony, a place made iconic for the journalist's interviews.

"You are Princess Leia of Star Wars of the reporters", jokes the showman.

It is always Fiorello who kicks off the music with a re-edition of "Grazie dei fior", revisited in the manner of the Negramaro.
