Wilkau-Haßlau (dpa) - The final end for the only Haribo plant in East Germany is causing severe criticism.

"We expected a cooperative, solution-oriented attitude from Haribo," wrote Saxony's Minister of Economic Affairs Martin Dulig (SPD) on Twitter.

«A chance was wasted here;

the result of the negotiations is disappointing. "

The works council head of the plant in Wilkau-Haßlau near Zwickau, Maik Pörschmann, told the German Press Agency on Tuesday: “We learned the decision from the press.

Haribo leaves us completely in the dark. "

The colleagues with whom he spoke were dejected.

The traditional confectionery production at the location is now finally history, regretted Pörschmann.

Haribo had announced at the beginning of the week that no buyer had been found for the work.

Therefore the sales negotiations were ended.

The inner-city area is now to be developed elsewhere.

According to the information, 119 employees are affected, of whom, according to the company, almost 80 have already found a new job or are retiring.

The gold bear manufacturer shut down production in Saxony at the end of 2020.

The closure was justified with high investments that were necessary at the location.

Dulig had advocated a takeover of the plant by competitor Katjes.

The company was seriously interested in the location, emphasized Dulig, who is also the SPD's Eastern Representative.

"There was justified hope that production could continue."

A Katjes spokeswoman confirmed to the dpa that there had been a viewing appointment.

However, it turned out that the structural substance was not sufficient to continue production there with fruit gums.

"Unfortunately, it turns out once again that the East has apparently only been the extended and inexpensive workbench for western companies for years and that the sails are thrown here in the event of the slightest economic headwind, regardless of losses," said Dulig, referring to Haribo's decision.

"That is irresponsible."

The food-pleasure-restaurants union had previously made a similar statement.

The head of the left parliamentary group in the Saxon state parliament, Rico Gebhardt, described it as "a shame" how Haribo treats his East German employees.

In contrast, the Zwickau CDU member of the Bundestag, Carsten Körber Dulig, accused Dulig of having awakened false expectations with his statements about Katjes in early February.

"About two out of three employees are already working in new jobs," he said.

"And I am confident that we will now find a good offer in the region for the remaining up to 39 employees, whose contracts will expire at the end of March and the end of June."

Körber praised that Haribo continued to bear responsibility in Wilkau-Haßlau.

The company has agreed to compensate for the trade tax losses for two years.

In addition, it wants to further develop the factory premises with the city.
