Hamburg (dpa / lno) - The number of company bankruptcies in the Corona year 2020 has fallen by a quarter in Hamburg compared to the previous year.

The bankruptcy court reported 561 decided applications for corporate insolvency - 25 percent less than in 2019, the North Statistics Office announced on Tuesday.

However, it pointed out that the obligation to file for insolvency was and is partly suspended due to the Corona crisis.

The obligation to file for insolvency for over-indebted companies was suspended until the end of December 2020.

The obligation to apply for insolvent companies has been in effect again since October.

However, this will only have an impact on the numbers later, due to the processing time of the courts, among other things.

The obligation to file for bankruptcy remains suspended until the end of April 2021 for over-indebted companies for which state aid is still pending.

According to the information, at least 9,000 employees in Hamburg were directly affected by the bankruptcies - 39 percent more than in 2019. The total amount of the claims was just under 842 million euros, however, well below the level of the previous year.

On average, the insolvent companies owed their creditors more than 1.5 million euros.
