Mönchengladbach (AP) - Borussia Dortmund has almost completely spoiled the season with Borussia Mönchengladbach for its future coach Marco Rose with the 15th entry into a cup semi-final.

On Tuesday evening, BVB won the explosive quarter-final duel between the two western rivals 1-0 (0-0) and thus achieved a cup win in Gladbach for the first time in the third attempt.

Jadon Sancho (66th minute) took advantage of a bad playing error by national player Florian Neuhaus in an intense game to make Dortmund's first cup semi-final in eight years perfect.

The yellow-red card for BVB player Mahmoud Dahoud didn't change anything (90 + 3).

Gladbach now has to start a race to catch up in the Bundesliga in order to qualify for the European Cup again.

In the round of 16 of the Champions League, after the 0-2 in the first leg against Manchester City, the end threatens.

Since Rose made his decision to move to Dortmund in the summer a good two weeks ago, things have been going downhill for the Gladbach team: The cup failure on Tuesday against Rose's future club was the fourth consecutive competitive defeat since then.

"This game is basically very, very important for us," Rose said before the match on ARD.

As much as he assured that this explosive encounter was not about him, the eyes were on the coach.

A brief hug before the game with his future assistant Edin Terzic, otherwise the coach, who had fallen out of favor with the Gladbach fans, avoided any contact with his future employer.

For the time being, he does not have to worry about the premature end of his work on the Lower Rhine.

When asked whether this would also apply to defeats against BVB and Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, sports director Max Eberl made it clear before the game: "I don't see the reason why it shouldn't work."

The earnings crisis mentioned by Eberl did not initially make itself felt in the empty Borussia Park.

The Gladbachers were looking for the way forward and already had a huge chance to take the lead in the second minute when Marcus Thuram put the ball next to the goal after a fine pass from Jonas Hofmann.

BVB wasn't even in the game, and it was over for Raphael Guerreiro.

The outside man had to go down injured in the fifth minute due to muscular problems and was replaced by Nico Schulz.

The hosts remained the more active and structured team in the period that followed, also because BVB made a lot of unnecessary ball losses in the build-up of the game.

BVB was by no means without a chance.

With a failed volley shot by Marco Reus (8th) and a good opportunity by storm giant Erling Haaland (36th) when the Norwegian was free, the black and yellow could have taken the lead.

Otherwise it was a poor first half with more duels than glamorous moments - in contrast to the fast-paced Bundesliga duel on January 22nd (4-2).

With more momentum, BVB came out of the locker room and immediately caused dicey moments on the Gladbach defensive.

And the Terzic-Elf was already able to cheer when Haaland met according to Reus' template (53rd).

But before that, the striker had kicked his opponent Ramy Bensebaini in the heels, and the goal was withdrawn accordingly.

But it happened 13 minutes later.

After a fateful mistake by Neuhaus at a Gladbach corner, it quickly went in the other direction via Schulz, Haaland and Reus, before Sancho completed his fourth cup goal.

BVB goalkeeper Marwin Hitz had previously prevented Bensebaini from falling behind (59th).
