Potsdam - Avian influenza has occurred in a turkey population on a farm in Prignitz.

The Ministry of Consumer Protection announced on Tuesday that around 18,200 animals had been killed.

The pathogen H5N8 (avian influenza / avian influenza) was detected in a flock of farmed poultry.

It is the eighth case of avian influenza in a farm poultry flock within a few weeks in the country.

The operator had informed the district veterinary office after an increasing number of animals had died.

Thereupon, according to the information, the stock was immediately blocked by the authorities and samples were taken.

The Berlin-Brandenburg state laboratory and the national reference laboratory (Friedrich Loeffler Institute - FLI) confirmed the suspicion of the highly contagious avian flu virus H5N8.

A restricted area with a radius of at least three kilometers was set up around the company.

Since mid-December of last year, animals have been compulsory in risk areas.
