Rabat decided to "suspend all contact" with the German embassy in Morocco, due to

"deep misunderstandings"

with Berlin on the question of Western Sahara among other issues, according to Moroccan diplomatic sources.

The local press published on Monday a letter from the head of Moroccan diplomacy,

Nasser Bourita

, to the head of the government Saad-Eddine El Othmani explaining the decision.

"All ministerial departments (...) are kindly requested to suspend all contact, interaction or action (...) both with the German embassy in Morocco and with

related

German political foundations and cooperation agencies

", indicates this official email.

"The Ministry of Foreign Relations also adopted the decision to suspend all contact or management with the embassy," reads the letter that evokes "deep misunderstandings" with Germany regarding "issues" fundamental to Morocco.

"Morocco wishes to preserve its relationship with Germany, but it is a form of alert that expresses

discomfort on various issues,"

a senior official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed to AFP.

"There will be no contact until answers are given to different questions asked," he said.

Among the sticking points is Germany's position on

Western Sahara

, which criticizes the US decision to recognize Moroccan sovereignty in the disputed territory, but also the withdrawal of Rabat in the negotiations on the future of Libya at a conference organized in Berlin in January 2020, he said.

At the beginning of December, the head of Moroccan diplomacy welcomed in a statement

"the excellence of the cooperation between the two countries"

after a telephone meeting with the German Minister for Economic and Development Cooperation, Gerd Müller.

Berlin had just released

1,387 million euros

of financial support, of which 202.6 million in donations and the rest in advantageous credits, to support the reforms of the Moroccan financial system and emergency aid to fight against covid-19.
