Berlin (dpa) - Eleven game days before the end of the season, the record national soccer player Lothar Matthäus believes that FC Schalke 04's stay in the Bundesliga is still possible.

The bottom of the table has "with the next fresh start one more, all, very last chance," wrote the 59-year-old in his column on Sky.

The prerequisite is a victory on Friday evening (8.30 p.m. / DAZN) against the penultimate FSV Mainz 05.

The Gelsenkirchen team split up on Sunday after an alleged revolt of leading players from coach Christian Gross and four other athletes responsible.

Schalke is bottom of the table with nine points behind the relegation place.

According to Matthäus, a commitment of the former Schalke players Mike Büskens and Gerald Asamoah is one of the decisive factors for staying in the class.

“If the Schalke team is now accompanied, motivated or trained by club legends like Asamoah or Büskens and these original Schalke players somehow manage to gain points and gain self-confidence, then one of the greatest miracles in Bundesliga history can still come true be », wrote the record international.

Matthäus went hard in court with the players who are said to have stood against the coach.

It goes with the chaos on Schalke that the three newcomers Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Shkodran Mustafi and Sead Kolasinac led the rebellion.

“The three of all people, from whom one expected so much and who should pull the rest along because of their alleged class, have so far been totally disappointing or have not provided any proof of performance at all due to a lack of fitness,” said the 1990 World Champion.
