Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - The increase in staff at the state police in Saxony-Anhalt is to continue in the coming years.

The current plan is to train so many junior staff every year that there will be almost 7,000 active police officers in five years, said Interior Minister Michael Richter (CDU).

According to this, 350 young men and women would have to begin their training at the police college every year by 2025.

Minister Richter is sticking to the long-term personnel plan of the Kenya coalition.

On Monday, the first of two training rounds for this year started at the police college with 120 candidates, as the ministry announced.

In order to achieve our own recruitment target, another 230 places would have to be filled for the fall.

After years of downsizing, the coalition of CDU, SPD and Greens decided to reverse the trend in 2016.

Instead of 5,700, 6400 police officers should be on duty again this year.

To this end, the number of apprenticeships has been doubled several times.

At the peak, 700 candidates were hired.

Since the beginning of the year, more than 6,000 law enforcement officers have been on the road again.

According to estimates by the police union GdP, the target of 6400 colleagues will be just undercut by the end of the year.

A new state parliament will be elected on June 6th in Saxony-Anhalt.

A new state government would also have to decide on the personnel plans for the police.

But there is consensus among the parties that there is an increase.

A few days ago, SPD parliamentary group leader Katja Pähle campaigned for the goal of 7,000 police forces.

She criticized the fact that instead of 350, more than 500 apprenticeship positions were required annually.

“The University of Applied Sciences can do that, it just has to get the job now and not in autumn,” says Pähle.

The FDP also wants to further increase the staffing levels in the state police.

In addition to law enforcement officers for service on the streets, the interim party leader Lydia Hüskens also calls for 500 additional positions in the administration to be created.

"This also relieves the enforcement officers and enables more presence in the area."
