Munich (dpy / lby) - In future, funerals without a coffin will no longer be prohibited in Bavaria.

An application by the CSU and Free Voters to amend the funeral ordinance in the state parliament provides for permission for the cemetery bearers to relax the coffin obligation.

"Because everyone has the right to be buried according to their ideological or religious attitude - even without a coffin, as long as public interests do not oppose this," said FW parliamentary group vice Joachim Hanisch on Tuesday in Munich.

When the new regulation will finally be adopted by parliament was initially still open.

For years, the CSU had blocked a loosening of the coffin obligation, which had been called for again and again.

The background is the possibility of carrying out burials according to the Muslim rite in a linen cloth.

As recently as last July, the CSU and Free Voters had rejected proposals from the SPD and the Greens.

"Especially with regard to the rights enshrined in our constitution, such as freedom of religion and human dignity, an open approach to a dignified burial according to the individual needs of every person is out of the question," said Hanisch.

Consequently, a burial in a shroud without a coffin is important for the revision of the funeral ordinance.
