Karlsbad (dpa) - 15,000 additional vaccine doses have arrived from Germany in the Czech Republic, which is badly affected by Corona.

This was confirmed by a spokeswoman for the administrative region based in Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) on Tuesday.

The federal states of Bavaria, Saxony and Thuringia had announced the joint donation, which is intended for the corona hotspots in western Czech Republic near the border.

The government in Prague added 1,800 cans from its own limited stocks.

In the Cheb, Sokolov and Karlovy Vary districts, the 7-day incidence per 100,000 population is 597, 1002 and 936, respectively, according to the Ministry of Health.

It is a vaccine from the Astrazeneca company, for which the authorities in the Czech Republic, unlike Germany, have not set an upper age limit.

The President of the Karlovy Vary Region, Petr Kulhanek, spoke of a "gesture of helpfulness".

With the additional vaccine, the risk of transmission in the border area could be reduced.

In addition, family doctors can now be involved in the vaccination campaign for people over 70 years of age.

Due to the limited availability of the vaccine, the vaccination campaign in the Czech Republic is progressing only slowly.

According to the Ministry of Health, 674,040 single doses have been administered to date.

The authorities reported 12 150 new corona infections within 24 hours.

There have been more than 1.2 million confirmed infections and 20,700 deaths since the pandemic began.

The Czech Republic has around 10.7 million inhabitants.
