Essen (dpa / lnw) - A traveling exhibition on 1700 years of Jewish life in Germany was opened on Tuesday evening in the Old Synagogue in Essen - despite Corona and without a public audience.

The focus of the multimedia show “People, Images, Places” is on the everyday history of Jews in what is now Germany - up to the present day.

The focus is on people whose lives reflect significant events in Jewish history in Germany.

The other stations after Essen (until April 27) are Münster, Cologne, Wesel and Dortmund.

The interactive exhibition, installed in four cubes, was designed by the Jewish Museum Cologne MiQua of the Rhineland Regional Association (LVR).

The planned tour is funded by the cultural foundation of the Westphalia-Lippe Regional Association (LWL).

It is part of the events for the festival year 2021 “1700 Years of Jewish Life in Germany”.

As soon as cultural institutions are allowed to reopen, the show in Essen should be open to everyone.

Materials are prepared for viewing by school classes.

"It is the duty and responsibility of all of us to inform ourselves about Jewish history and culture and to impart knowledge about it," said LVR cultural department head Milena Karabaic at the opening, which was broadcast online, according to a statement.

The City of Essen's head of culture, Muchtar Al Ghusain, described it as important “that young people in particular can get to know the diversity of European culture”.

Jews are the oldest non-Christian minority in Germany.

"It's about Jewish culture in its diversity and tradition and not just about the history of persecution."
