Potsdam (dpa / bb) - Turtles, snakes, killer clams: According to their own statements, customs in Brandenburg confiscated around 470,000 species-protected animals and plants or products made from them in 2019.

In addition to tin cans with bear meat and objects with ivory decorations, live snakes, turtles, parrots and unearthed orchids were discovered among travelers.

With its work, the customs make an important contribution to the protection of biological biodiversity, said the spokesman for the main customs office in Potsdam, Andreas Graf, with a view to the day of species protection this Wednesday (3 March).

Unfortunately, there are still too many violations of species protection regulations.

In spite of the severely restricted travel options in the corona pandemic, according to him, stony corals, killer clam shells and goods made from crocodile and snake skin have already been confiscated at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) this year.

An evaluation for the past year is not yet available.

The German customs monitor compliance with the legal import and export regulations in the international movement of goods.

Protected animals and plants as well as goods made from them that are illegally imported or exported without the required documents will be confiscated.
