Berlin (dpa / bb) - Going for a drink or going to a restaurant - that was far less an option than usual for Berliners in the Corona year 2020.

Because hardly any holidaymakers came, the hospitality industry experienced a sharp slump.

Compared to the previous year, half of sales were lost, as the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office announced on Tuesday.

Mandatory closings and infection concerns kept customers away, especially from hotels, which performed almost two-thirds weaker than in 2019. Restaurants, pubs and caterers lost around 40 percent of their business.

The bottom line was a decline in sales of 48.1 percent for the hospitality industry.

Adjusted for price increases, it was 49.9 percent.
