A judicial investigation for "facts of break and enter" was opened after the escape on Saturday, with a "homemade saw" and a "curtain", of two Moldovan detainees of the Périgueux remand center, the police said on Monday. prosecutor of Périgueux.

The two men of 25 and 33, still on the run, acted around 4 o'clock on Saturday, explained Solène Belaouar, during a press conference, “they sawed off the bars of their common cell, located on the second and last floor. , with an artisanal saw made up of a piece of a broom handle in which a blade has been inserted ”.

They "had so far not posed any particular difficulty in detention"

The two detainees "walked through the roofs to the main courtyard", were able to access the building housing the entrance and the staff changing rooms on the second floor, in still unclear circumstances, according to the prosecutor.

From there, they sawed off a bar again, using a curtain found there to slip down the street four or five meters below.

“An artisanal saw was found at this location,” added Solène Belaouar.

The two men who did not know each other before being imprisoned in Périgueux, are suspected of belonging to organized crime.

A time in charge of cleaning and the distribution of meals in the prison, they "had so far not posed any particular difficulty in detention nor alerted the prison administration to a possible risk of escape", added the prosecutor. .

Clothes under the covers deceived the supervisors

The escape was noted at 7 am Saturday during the relief of the supervisory staff.

The 5:30 am check, which is carried out through the eyecup of the cell door, did not detect their absence because the fugitives had placed "clothes under the covers in the beds to simulate the presence of bodies" and "A curtain placed on the window concealed the sawn bars".

The two Moldovans were imprisoned for organized robbery and criminal association in separate cases, one investigated in Limoges for the 25-year-old fugitive, imprisoned for a year, and the other in Bordeaux for the 33-year-old. prison for six months.

They were "not known to the French authorities for acts of violence or blood crimes".

According to the prison administration, the Périgueux remand center had 124 people imprisoned on February 1, with an operational capacity of 99 places.
