Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Almost two weeks before the state elections, CDU top candidate Susanne Eisenmann and Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) face each other in the SWR's only TV duel tonight.

The challenger is under pressure because the polls so far predict a clear victory for the Greens.

The live duel in the Stuttgart Wagenhallen will be moderated by SWR editor-in-chief Fritz Frey.

Depending on the poll, the gap between the eco-party and the CDU before the state elections on March 14th is between three and seven points.

It is to be expected that the management of the corona crisis will play a major role in the TV duel - even if Eisenmann and Kretschmann, who govern together in a green-black coalition, have actually agreed to leave the issue out of the election campaign .

Two days after the duel, the federal and state governments will decide on possible loosening of the lockdown.

Kretschmann had recently made a course correction and pleaded for more openings with the help of rapid tests.

It will be exciting to see whether the 56-year-old Eisenmann will heed the advice of her political foster father, ex-Prime Minister Günther Oettinger, to attack more strongly.

At the weekend, she called for secondary schools to be gradually reopened from March 8th.
