March 01, 2021 Myanmar Ambassador Hmway Hmway Khyne was summoned today to the Farnesina to request that the military authorities immediately put an end to all violent repression of democratic protests in the country.

Italy expressed its solidarity with all those who demonstrate peacefully to defend civil institutions and the democratic future of their country and reiterated the condemnation of the military coup of last February 1st.

In addition, he demanded the immediate release of the arbitrarily detained State Councilor Aung San Suu Kyi and all those arrested following the coup.

The Farnesina also underlined the illegitimacy of the military's decision to cancel the November elections: the Ambassador was reminded that alleged electoral fraud must be dealt with within the established procedures and that the will of the Burmese people must be respected.
