It is a long serial, the story of the wreck Skytteren, which sank off Måseskär in 1942. The 172-meter-long ship contains up to half a million liters of oil.

Oil that leaks continuously, drop by drop.

The wreck is in poor condition after the almost 80 years on the seabed.

In addition, it is directly adjacent to a sensitive archipelago, both in terms of the marine environment and beach areas.

- It's probably starting time now.

It does not count as an acute leak, but it leaks small, tiny drops.

There are a lot of recreational fishermen who move out there, and they have seen oil from time to time, says Fredrik Lindahl at the Swedish Marine and Water Authority.

Not the first dive

In 2018, the authority conducted the first diving survey of Skytteren.

Then 27,000 pictures of the wreck were taken down on the seabed, to get an overview of where in the wreck the oil is.

- So far we have not had enough information.

But now the last piece of the puzzle is laid before we can lay it out for emptying, says Fredrik Lindahl.

Remediation costs over 20 million

According to Fredrik Lindahl, emptying the Sagittarius of oil will cost at least SEK 20 million.

So you think the Sagittarius can be drained of oil in the coming year?

- That is really the ambition.

And it is during spring, summer and early autumn that the weather conditions are best, says Fredrik Lindahl.
