329 people or institutions have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize 2021, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Gavi Vaccine Alliance.

"It would have been surprising if (the pandemic) had not been reflected in the nominations," said the director of the Nobel Institute, Olav Njolstad, on Monday.

The names of the nominees will be kept under lock and key for at least 50 years.

Often, however, the submitters make their suggestions public themselves.

The nominations of the former US President Donald Trump and the climate activist Greta Thunberg were therefore already known.

The non-governmental organization Reporters Without Borders and the Committee for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ) are also nominated.

The list also includes well-known opposition politicians such as the Belarusian activist Svetlana Tichanovskaya and the Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny imprisoned in Russia.

The highest number of proposals to date was recorded in 2016 with 376 candidates.
