Schwerin (dpa / mv) - student teachers should help in the coming months at schools to catch up on learning material.

Volunteers can apply directly to schools of their choice to support the teachers for a few hours a week, said Education Minister Bettina Martin (SPD) on Monday.

The hours would be paid for.

The students could help, for example, with distance teaching, with group splits, during ongoing lessons or with targeted support for individual students.

The use of student teachers had been called for by parents and teachers' associations and is one of three pillars of a new support program for schools in the state.

It also provides that every school will have an additional 2,500 euros available by the end of the school year in June to pay additional external helpers, for example for supervision to ensure hygiene measures in everyday school life.

In addition, every student in MV should be allowed to take up to 30 tutoring lessons from a private provider free of charge - as soon as the private education providers can carry out their learning offers again.
