Osnabrück (dpa / lni) - From the perspective of Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), the corona pandemic makes the importance of species protection clear.

"Because the decline in biodiversity and the penetration of humans into sensitive natural areas increase the risk of the transmission of pathogens," said Merkel on Monday in a greeting on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) in Osnabrück.

The pandemic once again dramatically raised awareness of the dependence on nature and the environment.

EU Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans said that there was little time left for politicians to tackle the climate and biodiversity crisis.

"It's really five to twelve."

Investments after the Corona crisis would therefore have to be made in sustainable future topics.

No region should be left behind.

The EU aims to reduce greenhouse gases by 55 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 and wants to make the continent climate neutral by 2050.

The DBU is considered to be the largest environmental foundation in Europe.

It started work 30 years ago.

Since then, it has supported more than 10,000 projects with a funding volume of almost 1.9 billion euros.

The current foundation capital is 2.32 billion euros.
