Neubrandenburg (dpa / mv) - The legal dispute over the violent death of six-year-old Leonie from Torgelow (Western Pomerania-Greifswald) could be another case for the Federal Court of Justice.

As defense attorney Jörg Fenger said on Monday in Neubrandenburg, the lawyers of the convicted stepfather have again appealed against the judgment of the Neubrandenburg regional court.

"This is supposed to keep the prescribed deadline of one week," said Fenger.

Whether the appeal is upheld now depends on the written grounds for the judgment, which will be thoroughly examined.

The 29-year-old stepfather was sentenced to life imprisonment for the second time on February 25.

"That was a murder under cover by omission," explained Judge Henning Kolf, who led the revision process.

In addition, the man was found guilty of bodily harm resulting in death and mistreatment of two wards - Leonies and her younger brother.

The girl was found dead in the home of the family of five on January 12, 2019.

The 29-year-old had badly mistreated the child and wanted to prevent her from reporting on the acts of violence.

Kolf explained that he delayed medical help for hours.

The convicted person had not made any statements in the appeal proceedings.

"It's about a lot for our client," said Fenger.

The defense had pleaded for six years imprisonment.

A year ago, the 29-year-old was sentenced to life imprisonment for “murder by omission”.

His lawyer had appealed.

The Federal Court of Justice (BGH) had confirmed the “external act”, but partially overturned the judgment.

The motive for murder should be checked again more closely.
