Lebach (dpa / lrs) - In Saarland, Bundeswehr soldiers are now also being given corona vaccinations in a barracks.

In Lebach, the first nationwide vaccination center operated by the Bundeswehr started on Monday, said the inspector of the armed forces base, Lieutenant General Martin Schelleis.

"The special thing here today is that it is the first to be operated on a Bundeswehr property."

The location could serve as a model for other possible Bundeswehr vaccination centers in Germany.

In the specially converted sports hall of the Graf-Haeseler barracks, around 100 people were to be vaccinated on the first day.

With sufficient vaccine availability, around 300 vaccinations per day are possible.

About 30 soldiers are responsible for the operation.

Among them are medical specialists from the medical support center in Cochem, Rhineland-Palatinate, as well as soldiers from Airborne Reconnaissance Company 260 in Lebach.

The vaccination center is the fourth in total in Saarland.

It was built at the request of the Saarland Ministry of Health.

The appointments for the Saarlanders who are vaccinated against Corona in Lebach are also assigned via the central online booking system or via the telephone hotline.

In the fight against Covid-19, the Bundeswehr in Saarland is not only providing support with personnel and material, but now also with infrastructure, said the commander of the Saarland State Command, Colonel Matthias Reibold, in Lebach.

The Bundeswehr in Saarland has 5 locations with around 1,500 soldiers and around 450 civilian employees.

With Bundeswehr capacity, 18,000 people nationwide could be vaccinated a day, said Schelleis.

"But then distributed among the individual administrative assistance requests from the countries."
