Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has received the first vaccine against the coronavirus produced in India

, thus starting an acceleration of the immunization campaign on the continent.

India, which has recorded the highest number of


covid-19

cases in

the world after the United States, has vaccinated more than 12 million healthcare workers and frontline workers so far.

"It is remarkable how quickly our doctors and scientists have worked to strengthen the global fight against the coronavirus," Modi wrote on Twitter, posting a photo being vaccinated in a New Delhi hospital.



At the country level, the

United States remains by far the worst affected nation with over half a million deaths

(513,091, +7,283 victims since Friday) out of 28.60 million confirmed infections.

More than 20 million British citizens have received at least the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine.

This was reported by the British Minister of Health, Matt Hancock.

"We have a long way to go but we are making great strides," Hancock said in a video message.

The prime minister, Boris Johnson, for his part spoke of a "huge national achievement" and praised the medical staff for "work without rest".

With 20 million and 89,551 people who have received at least one dose of the serum,

Great Britain is the third country in the world for vaccinations per capita after Israel and the United Arab Emirates

.

The UK reported 6,035 new coronavirus cases and 144 deaths on Sunday, the lowest figures since last October.
