Karlsruhe (dpa) - Large retailers such as the drugstore chains Rossmann and dm are planning the free sale of corona rapid tests for self-application soon.

"We expect availability for our customers from March 9th at the earliest, provided that the manufacturer's delivery commitments can be met," said the managing director of dm, Sebastian Bayer, on Monday in Karlsruhe.

One is in close contact with the Federal Ministry of Health and with other authorities.

The company emphasized that if used correctly, the tests would be highly reliable.

The Rossmann group of companies, headquartered in Burgwedel near Hanover, is also targeting March 9th as the sales start, “provided that the delivery commitments are kept,” a spokeswoman said.

In order to be able to offer a test to as many customers as possible, the amount can be limited.

Rossmann is working flat out to be able to include tests from other manufacturers in the range.

Other retailers are also planning to enter this product segment, but make this dependent on availability and have not yet given a date for the start of sales.

Aldi Süd wants to start selling "shortly".

Edeka is also involved in the project, but does not provide any information about a possible start of sales.

Lidl and Rewe announced that they would examine such an expansion of the range.

Since the beginning of the pandemic about a year ago, retailers have been heaving products onto their shelves that have become box office hits - whether disinfectants or protective masks.

No company has yet given any specific information on how expensive the self-tests could be.

The preparations should also be available for sale in pharmacies.
