Koblenz / Saarbrücken - The tightened entry rules from the French border region Moselle will be randomly checked by the federal police from Tuesday.

The Moselle region will be classified as a virus variant area from Tuesday.

There will be checkpoints in the border area in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland at the adjacent department, but no stationary controls on the border line, said the spokesman for the Koblenz Federal Police Department on Monday.

"The danger that the federal police will check is omnipresent."

The practice of the federal police is no change from before: "We have been in the intensified border veil search the whole time," said the spokesman.

In the past few weeks, travelers from France and Luxembourg have been checked in the two federal states again and again.

The focus is on unauthorized entry and cross-border crime - in the course of this, however, compliance with the corona rules is also checked.

And that means from Tuesday the control of the stricter test requirement, which applies to travelers from the French Moselle.

You must present a negative corona test that is no older than 48 hours.

A quick test is sufficient.

If they don't have one with them, the federal police report it to the responsible health department and refer the person to a test center, the spokesman said.

In addition, there is a ban on public transport across the border.

The federal government decided on Sunday to classify the Moselle department, which borders the Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate, with its approximately one million inhabitants, as a virus variant area from Tuesday.

According to Prime Minister Jean Castex, the South African variant already accounts for 60 percent of positive cases there.

When entering Moselle, cross-border commuters who are not traveling for professional reasons must also present a negative test at the border from Monday.
