Großalmerode (dpa / lhe) - A boy broke into a smaller frozen lake and, according to the police, could only be pulled ashore by divers after about 50 minutes.

"The condition of the eight-year-old is critical," said a police spokesman in Eschwege (Werra-Meißner district).

"The child broke into a stagnant body of water in Großalmerode, which was obviously still frozen over, and was no longer able to free itself."

Another child who had been out with the boy early Monday evening had called for help.

The rescue workers were on site with a large number of police, fire brigade and divers from the DLRG.

A helicopter with a thermal imaging camera was also used.

After about 50 minutes, the unconscious boy was pulled ashore, the spokesman said.

How long he was under the ice is unclear.

After the first resuscitation measures, the child was brought to a clinic in Kassel by rescue helicopter.
