Potsdam / Berlin (dpa / bb) - Brandenburg and Berlin want to jointly develop the hydrogen economy in the capital region and have started a participation process for this purpose.

The Brandenburg Ministry of Economics and the Berlin Senate for Economics announced on Monday.

The energy administrations want to get an overview of the demand for hydrogen and the generation capacities.

They expect that the demand and supply of hydrogen will increase significantly in the coming years.

Both countries want to be prepared for this and give companies in the region a head start.

Companies, associations, municipalities and other stakeholders are called upon in an online survey in Berlin and Brandenburg to report their need or supply of hydrogen and to state their interest in getting started with hydrogen technology or use.

Among other things, it will be asked which infrastructure is available or which will be required in the future, it said.

“Green hydrogen can become an important component of the Brandenburg and Berlin energy systems.

It is climate-friendly, storable and transportable over long distances, ”explained Berlin's energy giant Ramona Pop and Brandenburg's energy minister Jörg Steinbach.

If the CO2 reduction targets are to be achieved, green energy must be provided primarily for mobility and the heating sector.

Green hydrogen is created when water is split into its components hydrogen and oxygen using renewable electricity (electrolysis).

The process is technologically mature, safe and ready for the market, but it is still relatively expensive.
