Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - The State Sports Association of Hesse recorded a significant decrease in its members due to the Corona crisis.

Last year, 58 percent of the approximately 7600 Hessian clubs had decreased in number by a total of 69,000 members, the lsb h announced on Monday.

This means that only 2.066 million people are organized in the State Sports Association - the number since 2010.

“The year-long membership growth in organized sport in Hesse was stopped by the corona pandemic.

In view of the ongoing restrictions, we fear that this development will even worsen by the end of 2021, ”said lsb h President Rolf Müller.

"The current lack of prospects is draining."

It is particularly worrying that almost 63 percent of all membership losses are attributable to children and young people.

"There is a great risk that we will lose a whole generation," warned Müller and the chairwoman of the Hesse Sports Youth, Juliane Kuhlmann.

The major Hessian clubs are also disproportionately affected by the decline in membership.

Around 40 percent of the declines - this corresponds to 27,500 people - are due to the 311 sports clubs with more than 1,000 members.

“This results in significant revenue losses.

In conjunction with the ongoing operating costs for the club's own sports infrastructure, we perceive

an increasingly critical financial situation and a corresponding need for support for this type of club, ”said Müller.
