Munich (dpa / lby) - The Bavarian State Seniors' Representation (LSVB) is calling for the Astrazeneca corona vaccine to be approved for the elderly.

In view of the imminent third wave in the pandemic, politicians must act immediately, stressed club chairman Franz Wölfl on Monday in Munich.

Politicians should no longer hide behind a recommendation from the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko).

The Stiko recommends the Astrazeneca vaccine only for people aged 18 to 64 years.

To assess the effectiveness of the vaccine from 65 years, there is not yet sufficient data, so the reasoning.

The EU medicines authority EMA had spoken out in favor of Europe-wide approval of the vaccine - for adults from 18 years of age without an age limit.

"Vaccination is about people's health, life and death," said Wölfl.

"The decision on this is exclusively a matter for the elected representatives, even if it sometimes takes a good deal of courage."
