Oberstdorf (dpa) - 13 of 24 decisions have been made at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf, the second week of the competition begins on Tuesday.

The highlights of the first half of the World Cup, which, in addition to great performances, had plenty of sun and a little piece of sports history.

DREAM WEATHER IN THE ALLGÄU: Soak up the sun instead of freezing, early spring fever instead of late winter.

The warm weather of up to 20 degrees gave the World Ski Championships a brilliant atmosphere, but made some athletes struggle.

“It has relatively little to do with winter sports at plus 15 degrees.

It's just a different way of running than it normally would be », said combined athlete Fabian Rießle.

Cross-country skier Janosch Brugger spoke of “spring vibes” and added: “You should stay out of the sun a bit during the break.

The heat is also full of energy. "

THE STARS FROM WEEK ONE: Alexander Bolschunow showed a phenomenal performance.

In the skiathlon, Russia's cross-country skier faced five Norwegians.

Bolshunov took over the leadership work and dropped the quintet one after the other.

The Norwegian duo Therese Johaug (eleventh World Championship gold) and super sprinter Johannes Kläbo (two titles in sprint and team sprint) shaped the event until half time.

For Germany, Karl Geiger has so far been the outstanding athlete as mixed world champion and individual silver winner.

PREMIERE FOR THE HISTORY BOOK: What remains of the 2021 World Cup is the long-awaited debut for women in Nordic combined.

On Saturday there was a trial of strength on the big stage for the first time.

National coach Klaus Edelmann saw a "mad competition" and expressed his hope that a second discipline would soon be included in the World Cup program.

Germany had nothing to do with the win, instead Norway dominated around winner Gyda Westvold Hansen.

FRUST AND JOY FOR GERMANY: Flieger Geiger only fulfilled a childhood dream with a single silver in his home country.

The next day he even went one better with Katharina Althaus, Anna Rupprecht and his friend Markus Eisenbichler: The quartet surprisingly became mixed world champions, putting silver for the Nordic combined team in the shade.

Apart from the three medals, there were also defeats.

The sadness of Katharina Hennig (29th place in the skiathlon) and Olympic ski jumping champion Carina Vogt (30th place in the individual) was symbolic of the difficult first days up to Geiger's premiere medal on Saturday.

THE PERMANENT TOPIC CORONA: The World Cup was not in danger, but the security concept around the competitions became more and more restrictive.

A few days before the start, very regular antigen tests were introduced for everyone involved.

Even in the course of the major event, there was further refinement: with a mask requirement in public places in town.

Of the thousands of corona tests that were carried out in the Alpine village in the first week, only a few were positive.

So far there have been no consequences for the competitions.
