Potsdam (dpa / bb) - Brandenburg wants to double its wilderness area with federal funds.

With a total of around 30,000 hectares, one percent of the area of Brandenburg is considered wilderness areas.

The Federal Environment Ministry has now confirmed this, announced the State Environment Ministry on Sunday.

Now federal funds from the so-called wilderness fund can be applied for to acquire additional areas, the ministry said.

In the coalition agreement, the SPD, CDU and Greens committed themselves to permanently developing wilderness areas on a total of two percent of the country's area, in which nature could freely develop, according to the ministry.

"Wilderness areas are an important building block for maintaining and developing biological diversity," said State Environment Minister Axel Vogel (Greens).

They are places of retreat for species that can no longer live in the cultivated landscape.

"In these outdoor laboratories we can research how climate change affects the development of plant and animal communities and how important the areas in the nationwide network are for the interconnection of habitats," the minister explained.

The basic structure of the wilderness areas in Brandenburg are near-natural forests, former military training areas and post-mining landscapes.

Brandenburg's largest wilderness areas are located on the former military training area Jüterbog and in the Lower Oder Valley National Park, each with several thousand hectares.
