Halle / Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - With the spring-like weather last week, some zoos in Saxony-Anhalt have seen a noticeable increase in visitors.

A spokesman for the mountain zoo in Halle announced that the weather change had resulted in a “significant trend reversal”.

In mid-February in particular, the zoo was so well attended that visitors who had not bought a ticket online had to be turned away.

The zoo now requires the prior purchase of an online ticket on the weekends.

On working days, tickets can be bought directly on site.

The rush of visitors to the zoo in Magdeburg was so great about a week ago that the entrances were briefly closed during lunchtime.

A spokeswoman said they wanted to extend the visiting hours from March 1 and lure people to the zoo in the evening with discounted tickets.

In Magdeburg, in addition to online tickets, on-site sales should remain possible over the weekend.

The city of Halle had tightened the corona measures due to the high number of new infections in winter.

Unlike the zoo in Magdeburg, the mountain zoo was closed in mid-December due to the pandemic.

At the end of January, the zoo was allowed to reopen in consultation with the city and in compliance with a hygiene concept.

The concept stipulates that a maximum of 600 people may be on the site at the same time.

Animal houses and petting zoos remain closed.
