- Switching from regular petrol to alkylate petrol reduces hydrocarbon emissions by 80 percent.

On the diesel side, HVO 100 is a good alternative, says Carl Rönnow, expert for environment and sustainability at the Swedish Boating Union.

But many boat owners refrain from environmental diesel because it can cause bacteria to grow in the tank?

- HVO 100 is fossil-free diesel that does not provide any microbial growth.

Now seagulls are starting to sell it and it can help reduce emissions significantly.

Mats Eriksson, at Sweboat, says that nowadays about 10 percent of the smaller "spinners" sold are electric motors.

Larger engines

The development is also progressing when it comes to the larger engines.

Two Swedish companies manufacture boats equipped with electric motors.

The producers also think about the environment when it comes to the choice of material in the boats, according to the Swedish Boating Union.

A large Swedish boat engine manufacturer is also investing in building more electric motors.

- It will drive development, says Carl Rönnow.

He further says that at present it is often too expensive to replace the older inboard with a new one with electric drive.

- It will be cheaper to buy a used petrol engine and instead change fuel.

But it would be good for the environment if old two-strokes were replaced.
