In the published material, Simes, discussing relations between the United States and Russia, notes that such a scenario would recall "what happened in the Gorbachev era."

"To insist that Moscow repeat what many Russians consider an unfortunate and humiliating approach would be to confuse the desired with the possible," the political scientist writes.

In addition, Simes believes that the future of US-Russian relations largely depends on Washington's choice.

"If the United States cannot agree to anything other than undeniable hegemony, Russia will undoubtedly become a serious deterrent, ready to challenge," the specialist emphasizes.

Simes also believes that US sanctions can be a useful tool, provided that they should not only "isolate and weaken Russia", but encourage Moscow to "be more flexible."

Earlier, Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov suggested that, according to his estimates, pressure from Washington would continue against Moscow.

As noted in the Kremlin, Russia is interested in forging good relations with the European Union and the United States, but considers NATO an enemy, since the alliance is building up its military infrastructure near the Russian borders.
