Berlin (dpa) - Before the Berlinale began, numerous cinema operators in Germany demanded a perspective for their houses.

Several movie theaters were lit on Sunday evening.

According to the industry association AG Kino, more than 300 cinemas had registered, for example in Berlin and Cologne.

"We have been living without culture for many months," said association chief Christian Bräuer of the German press agency.

Even if you've gotten used to it, staying at home is a burden.

The cinema operators are also concerned with existence.

The cinemas have been closed again since November, and many other facilities in Germany are also closed.

On Wednesday, the prime ministers of the federal states want to discuss how to proceed with the pandemic with Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU).

With their campaign, the cinema operators also wanted to send an appeal to politicians on the eve of the Berlinale: "Give us an opening perspective," said Bräuer in front of the Berliner Kino International.

One of the most important film festivals in the world starts this Monday with the Berlinale.

However, the film festival will initially only take place online - at a digital industry get-together, experts and journalists can watch new films on the Internet.

A public festival for the public is planned for June.
